According to recent data that the American Cancer Society (ACS) published, the cancer death rate in the United States has dropped by 25 percent over the last 20 years. In its annual report on cancer mortality, survival, and incidence, the ACS indicates that, between 1991 and 2014, cancer-related deaths dropped by 2.1 million. Over the past 10 years, the cancer death rate has decreased among men and women, dropping by 1.5 percent each year.
Men are still more likely to die of cancer. They have a higher risk of developing some of the more fatal forms of cancer (for instance, liver cancer) as they are more frequently exposed than women to certain risk factors. These include higher rates of infection with the hepatitis C virus and the excessive consumption of alcohol.
The ACS has been publishing the Cancer Statistics report for 50 years. It is among the most frequently quoted scientific journal articles annually.
